The Engel Scale

The Engel Scale (see the book, What’s Gone Wrong with the Harvest? J.F. Engel and W.H. Norton. Zondervan, 1975) is probably the most referred to schematic to describe the progress of a spiritual journey.  That doesn’t necessarily make it the best, but it’s a good place to start.  It has been criticized as a linear model and too simplistic.  For instance, it doesn’t  seem to provide a matrixed account at least two critical issues: 1)  knowledge of the gospel and 2) interest in and attitude toward the gospel.

In certain versions it has also has seemed to suggest that hostility to the gospel is more serious than coldness to it and experience suggests that it might not be the case.
